Cold aisle computer room construction

A cold aisle is constructed by arranging server racks face-to-face and enclosing the aisle to direct cool air efficiently to equipment intakes, preventing hot and cold air mixing.

Layout and Rack Arrangement

In a cold aisle configuration, server racks are positioned so that the fronts of the racks face each other, forming a corridor known as the cold aisle. Cool air is supplied from perforated floor tiles or dedicated air outlets into this aisle, and servers draw this air through their front intakes. The heated exhaust air exits from the back of the racks into adjacent hot aisles, which are then directed back to the cooling system.

Standard cabinets often have a width of 800mm (600mm equipment space plus 200mm side space) and a depth of 1150mm, with side compartments for cable management to improve reliability and aesthetics.

Containment and Isolation

Cold aisle containment (CAC) involves enclosing the cold aisle with physical barriers, such as doors at each end, ceiling panels, and side panels, to prevent cold air from mixing with hot exhaust air. This ensures that the coldest air reaches server inlets, maintaining uniform temperatures and reducing hotspots. The upper part of the aisle can be sealed with tempered glass or micro-perforated ceilings to maintain airflow while improving energy efficiency.

Galvanized iron sheets or additional panels may be added to prevent return air from entering the cold aisle and to balance air suction across the room.

Benefits of Cold Aisle Construction

Improved Cooling Efficiency: Directing cold air to server intakes reduces wasted cooling and allows higher air outlet temperatures from air conditioners, saving energy. Enhanced Equipment Reliability: Consistent temperatures prevent thermal stress, reducing the risk of overheating and extending server lifespan. Energy Savings: By minimizing hot and cold air mixing, containment reduces the workload on cooling systems, lowering operational costs.

Scalability: Modular containment systems can be adapted to different room sizes and layouts, allowing flexible deployment and future expansion.

Implementation Considerations

Ensure adequate return air vents in hot aisles to maintain balanced airflow. Use preloaded cable management in side compartments to avoid obstructing airflow and maintain aesthetics. Maintain fire safety compliance when sealing aisles, using materials that meet regulatory standards.

Monitor temperature gradients to optimize air conditioner performance and energy efficiency. By following these principles, a cold aisle can be effectively constructed to maximize cooling efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and enhance the reliability of IT equipment in a computer room or data center.
