OPGW fiber optic cable splicing test

OPGW fiber optic cable splicing involves careful preparation, fusion splicing, and rigorous testing using OTDR, optical power meters, and continuity checks to ensure both mechanical and optical integrity. Cable Preparation and SplicingOPGW cables combine grounding and optical communication functions, with fibers housed in central tubes or metal loose tubes. Before splicing, the cable must be prepared: Mark and secure the cable: Measure 2–2.

5 meters for stripping and wrap tape at the marking point to hold wires in place. Remove metal layers: Use a metal saw or mini grinder to cut and unwrap outer and inner aluminum or steel strands carefully, following safety precautions such as gloves and face shields. Expose fibers: For metal loose tubes, inner strands should extend about 10 mm beyond outer strands to expose the fiber tubes.

If fibers are in plastic tubes, preparation is similar to standard ADSS cables. Fusion splicing: Align fiber ends in a fusion splicer to permanently join fibers, ensuring minimal insertion loss. Mechanical splices may be used temporarily but are less reliable.

Heat-shrink tubes or protective closures are applied after splicing to secure the joint and protect fibers from environmental stress.

Testing Procedures

Testing ensures the OPGW cable maintains optical performance and continuity: Visual Inspection: Check for cuts, abrasions, bends, corrosion, or connector damage along the cable and at tower attachment points.

OTD

R Testing: Connect an OTDR to one end of the fiber to measure backscattered light and reflections. This identifies splice points, bends, breaks, and attenuation along the cable. Compare results to baseline data to detect deviations.

Optical Power Meter Testing: Inject a known light level at one end and measure output at the other to calculate insertion loss, including all splices and connectors. Continuity Testing: Use a visual fault locator or laser light source to confirm uninterrupted light transmission through the fiber, detecting breaks or severe bends. Environmental and Mechanical Tests: Optional tests may include tensile stress, temperature, and vibration assessments to ensure the cable withstands real-world conditions.

Best Practices

Test each cable four times: after manufacturing, after delivery, after installation and splicing, and final end-to-end testing. Maintain safety precautions during cable preparation and splicing.
