How to connect cut cable trays

Cut cable tray sections are connected using splice kits or adjustable splice plates, ensuring proper alignment, secure fastening, and electrical bonding. Step 1: Prepare the Tray SectionsBefore connecting, ensure the tray ends are cut cleanly and accurately. Use a metal cutting tool or side-action angle cutters for wire basket trays, or a saw suitable for steel, aluminum, or fiberglass trays.

Mark the cut line clearly and remove any sharp edges to prevent cable damage and ensure a safe installation. Step 2: Select the Appropriate Splice KitChoose a splice kit or adjustable splice plate compatible with your tray type and width. For wire basket trays, use UL-classified splice kits; for ladder or solid-bottom trays, flexible horizontal adjustable splice plates can be used.

Ensure the kit includes all necessary hardware such as bolts, nuts, and washers. Step 3: Align and Secure the SectionsPlace the cut tray sections in their final position. Align the ends so that side wires and mid-section wires are symmetric.

Attach the splice kit or plate according to the manufacturer's instructions. Typically, bolts are installed on the inside of the tray to protect cables. Use washers and nuts provided to secure the overlapping sections firmly.

Step 4: Ensure Electrical BondingFor trays that serve as an equipment grounding conductor, install a ground conductor along the splice to maintain electrical continuity. Remove any plastic masking on painted trays to expose pre-galvanized wire before bonding. For trays not suitable as grounding conductors, use separate approved grounding conductors and connectors.

Step 5: Verify InstallationCheck that all bolts are tight and the splice is secure. Ensure the tray is level and properly supported according to load ratings and spacing requirements. Confirm that all sharp edges are removed and that the tray is ready for cable installation.

Safety Tips

Always wear gloves and safety glasses when cutting and handling trays. Use tools appropriate for the tray material to avoid structural damage. Follow local electrical codes (NEC, CE, or CEC) for bonding, grounding, and load capacity.

By following these steps, cut cable tray sections can be safely and securely connected, maintaining both structural integrity and electrical safety.
