Selection and Configuration of Distribution Box Switches

Select a switch based on network requirements, then configure it via console access, set management IP, VLANs, and security settings to integrate it into your network.

Selecting the Switch

Determine network requirements: Consider the number of devices, expected traffic, and whether you need managed or unmanaged switches. Managed switches allow VLANs, port security, and remote management, which are essential for distribution boxes in business networks. Check hardware compatibility: Verify the switch model, port types (Gigabit, 10G, SFP), and ensure it supports your network topology.

Inspect physical condition: Ensure no damaged ports or cables and that indicator lights function properly.

Initial Setup

Connect via console: Use a terminal emulator like PuTTY or Tera Term with a serial or USB console cable. Set the correct COM port, baud rate (commonly 9600 or 115200), data bits, stop bits, parity, and flow control.

Access CL

I: Enter privileged EXEC mode using enable and then global configuration mode with configure terminal. Set hostname: Assign a unique hostname for identification using hostname. Configure passwords: Set an encrypted enable password (enable secret ) and secure console/VTY access to prevent unauthorized access.

Network Configuration

Assign management IP: Configure an IP address on the management VLAN to allow remote access using interface vlan and ip address.

Configure VLA

Ns: Create VLANs with vlan and assign ports to VLANs using interface and switchport access vlan. Set trunk ports: For uplinks between switches, configure trunk ports with switchport mode trunk to carry multiple VLANs. Enable security features: Configure port security, ACLs, and disable unused ports to enhance network safety.

Saving and Verifying Configuration

Save running configuration: Use copy running-config startup-config to ensure changes persist after a reboot. Verify settings: Use commands like show running-config, show vlan brief, and show ip interface brief to confirm correct configuration. By following these steps, you can select an appropriate switch for your distribution box and configure it to operate securely and efficiently within your network environment.
