When did relay protection originate

The concept of relay protection did not exist until the early 1900s. Over the next decades, engineers developed new relay protection. When the term “relay” was used, however, one was more likely to think of the station in the stagecoach era, where the exhausted horses were replaced by fresh, more productive horses. In 1901, the induction-type overcurrent relay was introduced, followed by ASEA (now ABB) launching the first time-delay overcurrent relay, TCB, in 1905, enabling graded protection. The current differential protection principle. In electrical engineering, a protective relay is a relay device designed to trip a circuit breaker when a fault is detected. : 4 The first protective relays were electromagnetic devices, relying on coils operating on moving parts to provide detection of abnormal operating conditions such as. Relays with calibrated operating characteristics and sometimes multiple operating coils are used to protect electrical circuits from overload or faults; in modern electric power systems these functions are performed by digital instruments still called protective relays or safety relays.
