Minimum specifications for repeated grounding of distribution boxes

Distribution boxes must have continuous, properly sized equipment grounding conductors connected to all devices and boxes, ensuring grounding continuity without interruption, in compliance with NEC 250. 148.

Grounding Conductor Continuity

All equipment grounding conductors (EGCs) associated with circuit conductors entering a distribution box must be connected within the box or to the box using approved devices, ensuring that removal of any device does not interrupt grounding continuity. For metallic boxes, connections are made via grounding screws, listed grounding devices, or bonding jumpers. For nonmetallic boxes, EGCs must be arranged so that any device requiring grounding can be connected.

Connection Methods and Materials

Clamps and continuity devices must be non-ferrous and UL-approved. Ground rods and underground connections should use Cadweld or Thermoweld methods for permanent, low-resistance connections. Ground conductors must be insulated or clearly identified with green insulation or markings and connected to boxes, devices, equipment, and panel ground bars using approved connectors.

Metallic conduit systems should be mechanically tight and bonded to equipment enclosures to maintain a continuous path to ground.

Resistance and Multiple Grounding Points

The maximum resistance to earth for a grounding system should not exceed 25 ohms. If resistance is higher, multiple rods connected with continuous conductors are required. Approved conductive backfill, such as bentonite clay, may be used to improve grounding in poor soil conditions.

Only copper conductors are recommended for buried runs; aluminum is prone to corrosion and failure.

Sizing and Bonding

Grounding conductors must be sized according to NEC Tables 250. 66, 250. 102, and 250.

122. The main bonding jumper must connect the neutral conductor to the equipment grounding conductor to ensure proper operation of overcurrent protective devices. All conduits entering primary switchgear, main panels, and secondary service panels must be bonded with a ground wire connecting grounding-type bushings to the equipment ground bar.

Summary of Key Requirements

Continuous grounding: No interruption in EGCs inside the box. Proper connections: Use grounding screws, listed devices, or approved bonding methods. Material standards: Non-ferrous, UL-approved clamps; copper conductors for buried runs.

Resistance limit: ≤25 ohms; use multiple rods if necessary. Conduit bonding: All metallic conduits mechanically bonded to maintain continuity. Compliance: Follow NEC 250.

148 and related grounding tables for conductor sizing and connections. By adhering to these requirements, distribution boxes maintain safe, reliable grounding, protecting both equipment and personnel from electrical faults and ensuring compliance with electrical codes.
