Which component on the IGBT module is the optocoupler Actual image

The optocoupler on an IGBT module is the small, typically rectangular component containing an LED and a photodetector, used to isolate the low-voltage control signals from the high-power IGBT gate.

Function and Structure

An optocoupler, also called an opto-isolator, transfers electrical signals between isolated circuits using light, providing galvanic isolation between the control side and the IGBT power stage. It consists of: Light Emitter (LED): Usually an infrared or AlGaAs LED that emits light when a control signal is applied. Light Detector: A phototransistor or photodiode that receives the LED light and generates a corresponding electrical signal to drive the IGBT gate.

Opaque Package: The LED and detector are sealed in a small rectangular or square package, often with 4–8 pins, to prevent direct electrical conduction.

Physical Identification

On an IGBT module or driver board: The optocoupler is usually a small black or dark-colored rectangular IC with multiple pins. It is located between the low-voltage control circuitry (e.g., MCU or PWM driver) and the IGBT gate driver circuit. Common models include HCPL-3120, HCPL-J312, HCPL-4506, which are designed to drive IGBTs directly or through a discrete gate stage.

The component may have pin labels like VCC, VEE, IN, OUT, and sometimes a small marking indicating the LED side.

How to Recognize It in Practice

Look for a component with an LED symbol or marking on the PCB silkscreen. It is often isolated from the high-voltage IGBT terminals by a small gap or slot in the PCB to maintain insulation. The optocoupler is not the large IGBT module itself, nor the gate resistors or diodes; it is the intermediate signal isolation device.

By locating a small rectangular IC between the control logic and the IGBT gate, often with 4–8 pins and marked with a part number like HCPL-3120 or HCPL-4506, you can identify the optocoupler on the IGBT module.
