How to connect the voltage line for relay protection

A voltage protection relay is connected by isolating the supply, wiring the input voltage to the relay terminals, and using potential-free contacts to control loads or alarms, ensuring proper phase and system configuration.

Understanding the Relay Function

A voltage protection relay safeguards electrical systems from overvoltage, undervoltage, phase failure, phase unbalance, incorrect phase sequence, and neutral disconnection. It monitors the voltage continuously and trips the circuit if the voltage deviates beyond preset limits, protecting equipment from damage and ensuring operational safety.

Safety Precautions

Always isolate the incoming supply before making any connections. Install fuses (typically 2 A) in series with the supply to prevent overcurrent. Maintain 10–15 mm clearance on both sides of the device and avoid installation near heat sources, vibration, or moisture.

Use sealing provisions to prevent unintentional adjustments. Installation should be performed by a qualified person with appropriate protective equipment.

Wiring the Relay

Identify the system type: Determine whether your system is single-phase (2-wire) or three-phase (3P3W or 3P4W). Connect the input voltage: For single-phase, connect L and N to the relay input terminals. For three-phase, connect L1, L2, L3, and N according to the relay diagram.

Control contacts: Use the potential-free relay contacts (COM, NO, NC) to connect the load or trigger alarms. These contacts operate independently of the relay's power supply and can safely switch external circuits. Set trip points and delays: Adjust the upper and lower voltage limits and trip delay using the front knobs or digital interface to match your system requirements.

Mounting

The relay is typically housed in a 17. 5 mm DIN-rail mountable enclosure. Use the withdraw clips for secure installation on a 35 mm DIN rail or wall mount.

Testing and Commissioning

After wiring, restore supply and verify the relay operation by simulating overvoltage and undervoltage conditions. Check that the LED indicators correctly display fault conditions and that the relay trips and resets as expected.

Practical Tips

Ensure phase sequence and neutral connections are correct to avoid false tripping. For motor or process protection, consider coordinating the relay with other protective devices like circuit breakers for fail-safe operation. Regularly inspect and test the relay to maintain reliability and prevent equipment damage.

By following these steps, a voltage protection relay can be safely and effectively connected to protect electrical systems from voltage-related faults.
