Single-mode fiber preform

A single-mode fiber preform is a precisely engineered glass rod with a core and cladding, designed to produce optical fibers that guide only one mode of light.

Structure and Materials

A single-mode fiber preform consists of a core rod surrounded by a cladding layer. The core is typically made from ultra-pure silica doped with materials like germanium to control the refractive index, while the cladding is made from high-purity silica, sometimes derived from natural quartz sand using APVD (Atmospheric Pressure Vapor Deposition) technology. The cladding must have extremely low metal impurities (e.g., aluminum ≤15 ppm, alkali metals ≤1 ppm) to minimize optical attenuation.

The preform diameter usually ranges from 100–200 mm, with the core-to-cladding diameter ratio carefully controlled to optimize fiber performance.

Manufacturing Methods

Several methods are used to fabricate single-mode fiber preforms: MCVD (Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition): Chemicals like SiCl4 and GeCl4 are deposited inside a rotating silica tube, forming soot that is vitrified into glass layers.

APV

D (Atmospheric Pressure Vapor Deposition): Natural quartz sand is directly deposited onto a mandrel at high temperature, forming the cladding layer efficiently and cost-effectively.

OV

D (Outside Vapor Deposition) and VAD (Vapor-phase Axial Deposition): These methods allow precise control of the refractive index profile and are often used for large-scale preforms. Tiretube Process: Combines separately prepared core rods and cladding sleeves, reducing contamination and allowing better control over the refractive index profile. Optical PropertiesSingle-mode fiber preforms are designed to guide only the LP01 mode, with higher-order modes suppressed.

The V-number criterion (V < 2. 405) ensures single-mode operation, depending on core radius, numerical aperture, and wavelength. Proper preform design minimizes polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and optical attenuation, which is critical for long-distance transmission.

The ellipticity of the core and cladding is typically kept below 2% to maintain axial symmetry and reduce PMD.

Advantages and Considerations

Using natural quartz sand with APVD reduces manufacturing costs while maintaining high optical quality. Controlling impurity levels and optimizing core-to-cladding ratios ensures low attenuation and high signal fidelity. Preform design also allows for efficient fiber drawing, producing kilometers of single-mode fiber suitable for telecommunications and high-speed data networks.

In summary, a single-mode fiber preform is a carefully engineered glass rod that forms the foundation for high-performance optical fibers, with precise control over materials, geometry, and manufacturing processes to ensure single-mode guidance and minimal signal loss.
