Internal circuitry of the optocoupler

An optocoupler consists of an LED emitter and a photodetector, optically coupled within a light-proof package to transfer signals while maintaining electrical isolation. Core ComponentsLED (Light-Emitting Diode): The input side of an optocoupler contains an infrared LED, typically made from gallium arsenide, which converts the electrical input signal into light. When forward-biased, the LED emits infrared radiation in the 900–940 nm wavelength range.

Photodetector: The output side contains a photosensitive element such as a phototransistor, photodiode, or photo-SCR. The photodetector is sensitive to the LED's emitted wavelength and converts the received light back into an electrical signal. In phototransistor optocouplers, the transistor conducts when illuminated, allowing current to flow between its collector and emitter.

Physical Layout

The LE

D and photodetector are mounted on adjacent arms of a lead-frame, which is a conductive metal structure that supports the components and provides electrical connections to the external pins. The devices are encapsulated in an opaque or transparent epoxy package that prevents external light interference while allowing the LED's light to reach the photodetector. Some designs, like the WL-OCPT series, use a co-planar or side-by-side structure with a clear epoxy dome acting as the optical medium between the LED and phototransistor, ensuring efficient light transfer and mechanical stability.

Operation

When a voltage is applied to the LED, it emits light that travels through the optical medium and strikes the photodetector. The photodetector responds by conducting current proportional to the light intensity, effectively transferring the input signal to the output side without any direct electrical connection. This optical coupling provides high electrical isolation, allowing low-voltage circuits to safely control high-voltage circuits.

Optocouplers can operate as switches, where the phototransistor turns on and off with the LED, or in linear applications, where the output current varies continuously with the input signal. The device's performance is influenced by parameters such as the current transfer ratio (CTR), parasitic capacitance, and response time.

Summary

In essence, the internal circuitry of an optocoupler is a compact, optically coupled system consisting of an LED and a photodetector mounted on a lead-frame and encapsulated in a protective package. This design allows safe signal transfer across electrically isolated circuits, making optocouplers essential in applications like isolated power supplies, microcontroller interfaces, and noise-sensitive analog circuits.
