Configuration of Finished Three-Level Distribution Box

A three-level distribution box typically consists of primary ACB protection, secondary MCCB distribution, and tertiary MCB circuits with integrated leakage and surge protection.

Overview of Three-

Level Distribution

A three-level distribution system is designed to ensure selective protection, reliability, and safety in low-voltage networks, following standards such as GB 50054 and IEC 60364. The levels are: Primary Distribution (Level 1)Uses an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) with short-time delay (0. 1–0.

5 s) for selective coordination with downstream devices. Rated current is typically 1. 2–1.

5 times the transformer capacity. Short-circuit breaking capacity exceeds the maximum short-circuit current at the installation point. Provides main isolation and protection for the entire system.

Secondary Distribution (Level 2)Employs Molded-Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs), either thermomagnetic for general loads or electronic for precise protection and communication. Selectivity with the upstream ACB must be verified. D-type tripping curves are used for motor circuits, while general loads follow standard curves.

Tertiary Distribution (Level 3)Uses Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) mounted on DIN rails. Type B (3–5 In) for resistive loads and lighting, Type C (5–10 In) for mixed loads and sockets, Type D (10–20 In) for inductive loads like motors. Each terminal circuit is equipped with RCBOs or RCDs for leakage protection.

Internal Components and Layout

A finished distribution box includes: Busbars: Phase and neutral bars sized for total load. Protective devices: ACB, MCCB, MCB, RCD/RCBO, fuses, and surge protective devices (SPD). Earth bar: Proper grounding for safety.

DI

N rails: For mounting modular devices. Cable entries and wiring space: Ensures neat installation and heat dissipation. Enclosure: Rated for IP/NEMA protection depending on indoor/outdoor use, corrosion resistance, and impact protection.

Example Configuration

For a 10 kV/0. 4 kV, 1000 kVA transformer: Primary: 2000 A ACB with LSIG protection, L = 1600 A, S = 0. 3 s, breaking capacity 50 kA.

Secondary: 400 A MCCB, thermal-magnetic, instantaneous trip 3200 A, breaking capacity 35 kA. Tertiary: 32 A MCB, type C, instantaneous trip 320 A, breaking capacity 10 kA, with RCBO for leakage protection.

Installation Considerations

Install in dry, accessible areas with good ventilation, typically at ~1. 5 m height. Ensure proper grounding, cable management, and correct wire gauge.

Label circuits and maintain modular design for future upgrades. Comply with IEC, NEC, or local codes and use certified components. This configuration ensures hierarchical protection, prevents overloads, and allows safe, reliable distribution from the transformer to individual circuits.
