Stress Measurement with Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors enable precise stress measurement by detecting strain-induced wavelength shifts in optical fibers, with capabilities for both longitudinal and transverse stress detection.

Principles of FB

G Stress SensingFBG sensors operate by reflecting specific wavelengths of light that shift in response to strain or stress applied to the fiber. When the host material experiences stress, the fiber deforms, causing a measurable change in the Bragg wavelength. By monitoring these wavelength shifts, the strain and stress in the material can be quantified.

Multiple FB

Gs can be embedded in orthogonal directions to capture the complete stress state of a material, although this increases system complexity and may affect the host structure's integrity.

Longitudinal and Transverse Stress Measurement

Recent advancements allow FBG sensors to measure both longitudinal and transverse stress with high spatial resolution. Techniques such as four-state polarization analysis combined with layer-peeling algorithms enable transverse stress detection without requiring expensive polarization-maintaining fibers. This method is also largely insensitive to temperature variations, making it suitable for nonisothermal environments.

Quasi-

Distributed and Multi-Parameter SensingFBG sensors can be arranged in quasi-distributed arrays to measure three-dimensional stress in situ. By calibrating the strain response and applying stress inversion algorithms, the FBG array can reconstruct the full stress tensor of a material, such as in overcoring or triaxial loading experiments. Additionally, FBGs can be combined with long-period gratings (LPGs) to simultaneously measure stress and temperature, allowing for remote and multi-parameter monitoring.

Combined Stress and Vibration SensingFBG sensors can also be integrated into combined stress-vibration sensors, where multiple FBGs are mounted on a mechanical structure (e.g., a stainless steel plate) to detect both stress and vibration simultaneously. These sensors offer high sensitivity, temperature compensation, and compact form factors, making them suitable for industrial and aerospace applications. Advantages and ApplicationsFBG-based stress sensors offer several advantages over traditional electrical or mechanical sensors: High sensitivity and accuracy for strain and stress detectionImmunity to electromagnetic interferenceCapability for distributed and remote sensingSimultaneous multi-parameter measurement (stress, temperature, vibration)Durability in harsh environments Applications include structural health monitoring of bridges, buildings, and aerospace components, as well as industrial machinery monitoring and geotechnical stress measurement.

SummaryFBG sensors provide a versatile and precise method for stress measurement. By leveraging wavelength shifts in optical fibers, advanced polarization analysis, and quasi-distributed arrays, they can measure longitudinal, transverse, and multi-dimensional stress states. Their robustness, high sensitivity, and ability to integrate with other sensing modalities make them a powerful tool for both research and practical engineering applications.
