Fireproof and fire-fighting cable tray installation method

Fireproof cable trays must be installed with proper routing, support, fireproof wraps, and firestopping to maintain cable integrity and comply with safety standards.

Planning and Layout

Route Planning: Cable trays should follow the shortest and straightest path possible, avoiding unnecessary crossings or detours, and aligning with the building structure to facilitate maintenance and reduce cable loss (Zeroinstrument). Segregation: Power and signal cables must be separated using dedicated trays to minimize electromagnetic interference (Zeroinstrument). Tray Selection: Choose tray material based on environment: painted or galvanized steel for indoor use, hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel for outdoor, and aluminum alloy or fiberglass-reinforced plastic for corrosive or high-humidity areas (Zeroinstrument).

Tray width and thickness should support the cable load without deformation.

Installation and Support

Support Spacing: Install supports at recommended intervals, typically 1. 5–2 meters for horizontal runs, using brackets and hangers compatible with tray material and load capacity (Cabletraymic). Alignment and Joints: Align tray sections carefully to prevent gaps or stress points.

Use manufacturer-specified splice plates or couplers, and avoid overcrowding to maintain fire-resistance effectiveness (Cabletraymic). Expansion Joints: Include expansion joints for long runs to prevent bending or warping (Cabletraymic). Fireproofing MeasuresFire-Resistant Wraps: For instrument control cables, use fireproof wraps such as FireMaster® Marine Plus blankets, fully encapsulated in aluminum foil, secured with steel banding straps at 150 mm centers.

Overlap joints by 50 mm at elbows and bends to ensure continuous protection (Morgan Thermal Ceramics). Firestopping: Seal all penetrations through walls, slabs, or shafts with fire-rated materials like firestop packs, mineral wool, or intumescent caulks. Ensure gaps around cables do not exceed 1 cm² and packing thickness is at least 24 cm.

Cover plates should be square, evenly painted, and tightly fitted (AllPCB).

Through-

Penetration Products: Use products like 3M Fire Barrier Moldable Putty+ or IC 15WB Caulk to seal cut edges and prevent heat penetration, protecting both structural steel and cable trays (Eaton).

Compliance and Standards

National and International Standards: Follow NEC Article 392, IEC 61537, and EN 50200/BS 476 for cable tray sizing, support, separation, and fire performance (Cabletraymic). Inspection and Maintenance: Regularly inspect trays for corrosion, loose fasteners, or damage, and replace compromised sections immediately to maintain fire resistance and compliance (Cabletraymic).

Summary

Proper installation of fireproof cable trays involves careful planning, correct tray selection, secure support, fireproof wrapping, and thorough firestopping, all while adhering to recognized standards. These measures ensure cable integrity during fires, protect personnel, and maintain system reliability.
