Multimode sensing optical cable

Multimode sensing optical cables use a larger core fiber to transmit multiple light modes, enabling high-efficiency sensing and data transmission over short to medium distances.

Overview

Multimode (MM) optical cables are designed with a core diameter typically of 50 µm or 62. 5 µm, allowing multiple light modes to propagate simultaneously. The 50 µm core with a graded-index (GI) profile has become the standard for most sensing applications, as it reduces modal dispersion and improves signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for distributed sensing systems like Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) (AP Sensing).

Structure

A multimode sensing optical cable generally consists of: Core: Higher refractive index to guide light efficiently. Cladding: Surrounds the core with a lower refractive index to maintain total internal reflection. Coating: Protects the fiber; polyacrylate is common for standard temperatures, while polyimide or metal coatings are used for extreme conditions.

Sheathing: Options include flame-retardant non-corrosive (FRNC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), or armored metal for harsh environments. Cables may be metal-free for flexibility and EMI resistance or armored for mechanical protection and rodent resistance.

Applications

Multimode sensing optical cables are widely used for: Industrial monitoring: Temperature, strain, and acoustic sensing in pipelines, power plants, and infrastructure. Data transmission: Short-distance communication within buildings, campuses, or data centers, supporting high data rates up to 11. 3 Gbps over 100 meters.

Specialized sensing: Laser energy delivery, fiber optic spectroscopy, and arc-flash detection systems.

Advantages

High coupling efficiency: Multimode fibers allow more light to enter the core, improving measurement sensitivity. Cost-effective: Equipment for multimode fibers is generally less expensive than singlemode systems. Versatile deployment: Suitable for indoor, outdoor, and harsh environments with various protective sheaths and coatings.

Distributed sensing capability: Unlike point-based sensors, multimode fiber cables provide continuous monitoring over long distances.

Technical Considerations

Modal dispersion: Graded-index multimode fibers reduce pulse broadening, enhancing signal quality over longer distances. Core size selection: 50 µm cores are preferred over 62. 5 µm for modern sensing applications due to better performance.

Environmental tolerance: Temperature ranges vary by cable type, from -40°C to 350°C for specialized industrial fibers. Connector compatibility: Multimode fibers can be terminated with MT, MPO, ST, or V-pin connectors depending on the application. In summary, multimode sensing optical cables combine a large-core fiber design with protective coatings and sheathing to deliver reliable, high-efficiency sensing and data transmission in industrial, commercial, and specialized applications, making them a versatile choice for distributed monitoring systems.

OverviewApplicationsComparison with single-mode fiberTypesEncircled fluxExternal links

Multi-mode optical fiber is a type of optical fiber mostly used for communication over short distances, such as within a building or on a campus. Multi-mode links can be used for data rates up to 800 Gbit/s. Multi-mode fiber has a fairly large core diameter that enables multiple light modes to be propagated and limits the maximum length of a transmission link because of modal dispersion. The standard G.651.1 defines the mos
