The Function of Fiber Optic Interface in Relay Protection

Use IEEE C37. 94-compliant fiber optic links to connect protection relays to multiplexers, ensuring secure, low-latency teleprotection communication.

Overview of Fiber Optic Teleprotection

Relay protection systems in substations require high-speed, reliable communication to quickly isolate faults and maintain grid stability. Traditional copper links are prone to electromagnetic interference, ground loops, and voltage surges, making fiber optics the preferred medium for teleprotection.

The IEE

E C37. 94 standard defines the optical interface for connecting relays to multiplexers, supporting Nx64 kbps channels (N = 1–12) over multimode or single-mode fiber.

Steps to Connect the Fiber Optic Interface

Select the Fiber Type and ConnectorUse multimode fiber (MMF) for short distances (typically 850 nm or 1310 nm) or single-mode fiber (SMF) for longer distances up to 20 km. Common connectors include ST, SC, or duplex LC-PC, depending on the relay and SFP transceiver requirements.

Install Fiber Cables

Route the fiber between the relay and the multiplexer or remote terminal, avoiding sharp bends and high-voltage areas. Ensure proper labeling and protection against mechanical damage.

Connect to Relay and Multiplexer

Insert the fiber connectors into the SFP transceivers or optical ports on the relay and multiplexer. For devices like the SEL-2595, up to eight relay contacts can be transmitted over a single fiber pair using the C37. 94 interface.

Configure Communication Parameters

Set the Nx64 kbps channel configuration according to the relay and multiplexer specifications. Verify the framing structure and line rate (typically 2,048 kbps for a single channel) to ensure compatibility.

Test the Link

Use a C37. 94 test set or optical power meter to validate signal integrity, latency, and error-free transmission. Monitor for communication channel alarms and ensure the link meets the required back-to-back operating time (e.g.,
