Several grounding points for lightning protection on communication towers

Multiple grounding points, properly bonded and connected to low-resistance electrodes, are essential for effective lightning protection on communication towers.

Key Principles

Purpose of Multiple Grounding Points: Lightning strikes carry extremely high currents that must be safely dissipated into the earth. Multiple grounding points reduce resistance, provide redundancy, and minimize step and touch potential hazards, protecting both personnel and equipment. Grounding Electrode Placement: Each tower leg should be connected to a dedicated grounding electrode, typically copper-bonded steel rods driven into the soil.

For improved performance, multiple rods can be installed in parallel, spaced at least one meter apart, and interconnected with buried conductors to reduce overall ground resistance. A typical target is below 5 ohms between any connected point on the ground bus and true earth ground. Bonding of Tower Components: All metallic structures, including air terminals, antennas, coaxial cables, waveguides, and equipment shelters, should be bonded to the tower and ultimately to the grounding system.

This ensures potential equalization and prevents side flashes during a lightning event. Coaxial cables should be bonded near the antenna base and at intervals along the tower, with a grounding bus bar installed near the tower base to consolidate connections. Conductor Specifications: Use #2 AWG minimum bare tinned copper wire for bonding tower legs to ground electrodes.

For coaxial cable grounding, #6 AWG tinned copper wire is commonly used. All connections should be mechanically secure and treated with anti-corrosion paste to maintain low resistance over time. Redundancy and Layout: Redundant grounding paths improve reliability.

Ground rods, conductors, and bonding paths should be arranged to provide multiple paths for lightning current to reach the earth. Ground mats or ring grounds can be used around the tower base to further enhance dissipation. Maintenance: Regular inspection is critical.

Environmental factors, corrosion, and physical wear can degrade grounding performance. Ensure all connections remain tight, clean, and free of oxidation. Standards and Recommendations: Follow ITU-T K.

112 and industry-specific guidelines for lightning protection, earthing, and bonding of radio base stations. These standards provide detailed procedures for air-termination systems, down-conductors, earthing networks, and surge protective devices. By implementing multiple, well-bonded grounding points with proper conductor sizing, electrode placement, and regular maintenance, communication towers can achieve effective lightning protection, safeguard equipment, and ensure operational continuity.
