Fiberglass Cable Tray Product Parameters

Fiberglass cable trays are made from fiber-reinforced polyester or vinyl ester resins, offering high corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, and fire retardancy for industrial and marine applications.

Material Composition

Fiberglass cable trays are typically manufactured using pultrusion, compression molding, or resin transfer molding. The glass fiber content in pultruded components ranges from 45–65% by weight, while flat sheets are 35–45%, and molded components are 25–45% by weight. All materials include UV-inhibiting additives to prevent degradation from sunlight exposure and are fire retardant, achieving a Class 1 flame spread rating (≤25) per ASTM E-84.

Conductive resin systems may include carbon additives to dissipate static electricity, meeting ABS rules for marine installations.

Resin Systems

Polyester Resin: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and suitable for general industrial applications. Vinyl Ester Resin: Offers superior chemical resistance, ideal for harsh chemical or marine environments. Both resin systems are applied with a surface veil during pultrusion to enhance chemical and UV protection.

Mechanical and Electrical Properties

Load Capacity: Comparable to steel trays, with high strength-to-weight ratio; fiberglass trays weigh approximately one-third of steel trays while maintaining equivalent or higher strength. Electrical Insulation: Non-conductive and non-magnetic, reducing shock hazards and interference with radio, radar, or microwave signals. Span and Deflection: Safe Working Load (SWL) is determined per IEC 61537, with load vs. span tables provided by manufacturers.

Types of Fiberglass Cable Trays

Ladder Type: Two side rails connected by transverse rungs; open design allows ventilation and heat dissipation, suitable for power and large-diameter control cables.

Channel/

Trough Type: Bottom plate with side rails; provides more protection for sensitive cables while allowing some ventilation. Optional covers are available for outdoor or dusty environments. Standards and CertificationsASTM E-84: Class 1 flame spread ratingASTM D-635: Self-extinguishing requirementsABS (American Bureau of Shipping): Approved for marine and offshore installationsIEC 61537: International standard for cable tray systems Environmental and Application ConsiderationsFiberglass cable trays are corrosion-resistant, UV-stable, and lightweight, making them suitable for chemical plants, marine vessels, industrial facilities, and outdoor installations.

They require low maintenance compared to steel alternatives and are ideal for electrically insulated and non-magnetic applications. These specifications ensure that fiberglass cable trays provide durable, safe, and reliable support for electrical and instrumentation cables in demanding environments.
