How to install a direct-buried optical cable connector

Direct-buried optical cable connectors should be installed in properly prepared splice enclosures or handholes, ensuring minimal stress on the fibers and protection from environmental and mechanical damage.

Trench and Cable Preparation

Before placing the connector, ensure the trench is dug to the required depth with a flat, smooth bottom. If the soil is rocky or semi-stony, cover the trench bottom with at least 10 cm of fine soil or sand to cushion the cable. Avoid overlapping or crossing cables in the trench, and lay each cable flat without arches or twists.

Use pulleys or guide devices to maintain the cable's minimum bend radius and prevent excessive pulling tension.

Handling the Cable

When unspooling the cable, use a figure-eight configuration to prevent kinking or twisting, especially near the connector or splice point. Avoid coiling the cable in a single direction for lengths over 30 meters (100 ft). Inspect the cable jacket for damage before and after placement, and repair any nicks or cuts immediately.

Connector Placement

Locate the splice or termination point in advance and prepare a handhole or splice enclosure at that location. Uncoil the cable slack horizontally in the enclosure to avoid tension on the fibers. Perform fiber splicing or connector termination using fusion splicing or mechanical connectors, aligning fibers precisely to minimize optical loss.

Protect the connection with a splice enclosure or protective sleeve to prevent moisture ingress, temperature fluctuations, and mechanical stress. Install warning tape and tracer wire above the buried cable to alert future excavators and facilitate locating the cable without disturbance.

Backfilling and Testing

After the connector is secured and protected, backfill the trench carefully, avoiding sharp rocks or debris that could damage the cable. Test the optical fibers for continuity, insertion loss, and insulation resistance to ensure the connection meets quality standards. Maintain proper separation from electrical conductors according to local codes to prevent interference.

Best Practices

Use armored or rodent-resistant cable in high-risk areas. Avoid excessive bending or pulling during installation. Keep cable reels protected and handle them carefully to prevent damage.

Plan splice points and access locations to minimize open trench time and reduce safety hazards. Following these steps ensures that direct-buried optical cable connectors are installed safely, maintain signal integrity, and remain protected against environmental and mechanical stresses over time.
