A 100Mbps optical port module is a compact, hot-pluggable transceiver that enables fiber-optic data transmission at 100 megabits per second, converting electrical Ethernet signals into optical signals and vice versa.

Overview

A 100Mbps optical port module, often referred to as a 100BASE FX SFP, is designed to transmit Fast Ethernet (100Mbps) data over fiber optic cables using the IEEE 802. 3u standard. It combines the Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) interface with fiber-optic technology, allowing network devices like switches, routers, and media converters to support fiber connections without replacing the entire hardware.

The module is hot-swappable, meaning it can be inserted or removed while the device is powered on, simplifying maintenance and upgrades.

How It Works

The network device provides a 100Mbps electrical interface internally.

The SF

P module converts the electrical signal into an optical signal at a specific wavelength (commonly 1310nm). The optical signal travels through fiber cables to the remote device. The receiving SFP converts the optical signal back into an electrical signal for the device.

This modular design allows flexible deployment over multi-mode or single-mode fiber, supporting distances from hundreds of meters up to 10 km, depending on the fiber type and module variant.
