Outgoing wiring of high-voltage switchboard distribution box

Outgoing feeders from a high-voltage switchboard are configured with circuit breakers, isolating and earthing switches, and measurement devices to ensure safe, reliable power distribution.

Feeder Configuration

Outgoing feeders in high-voltage switchboards are typically equipped with circuit breakers to interrupt fault currents, isolating switches to safely disconnect the feeder for maintenance, and earthing switches to ground the circuit when de-energized. Each feeder may also include current transformers (CTs) and potential transformers (PTs) for protection and measurement purposes.

C

Ts are usually installed on the busbar side of PTs to allow protection devices to detect faults in the PTs, while PTs on the busbar ensure voltage monitoring remains unaffected by individual feeder faults.

Protection and Auxiliary Devices

Depending on system requirements, outgoing feeders may include surge protection devices to guard against lightning strikes or transient overvoltages. Coupling devices for frequency carrier signals can be installed to transmit control commands or communication signals, enabling remote monitoring and automated operations. These devices collectively enhance the reliability and safety of the outgoing circuits.

Switchboard Design and AccessibilityHigh-voltage switchboards are often prefabricated metal-enclosed cubicles compliant with IEC 62271 standards. Outgoing feeders can be connected via fixed or withdrawable units. Withdrawable drawer-type units allow the complete feeder assembly to be removed for maintenance without shutting down the entire switchboard, providing isolation on both upstream (busbar) and downstream (outgoing circuit) sides.

This design is particularly useful for complex functions such as motor control or industrial distribution.

Operational Considerations

All work on outgoing feeders must be performed by qualified personnel trained in high-voltage safety, including the use of protective equipment and lockout/tagout procedures. The switchboard enclosure provides protection against direct and indirect electric shock, and the outgoing wiring must comply with applicable standards for voltage, current, and short-circuit withstand ratings. Proper labeling, clearances, and adherence to standards ensure safe operation and maintenance.

Summary

Outgoing wiring in high-voltage switchboards is a carefully engineered system combining protection, measurement, isolation, and operational flexibility. Circuit breakers, isolating and earthing switches, CTs, PTs, surge protection, and withdrawable units work together to provide safe, reliable, and maintainable power distribution from the switchboard to downstream circuits.
