Operating sequence of distribution box and switch box

The standard operating sequence is: power-on from general distribution box → distribution box → switch box, and power-off in reverse: switch box → distribution box → general distribution box.

Power-

On Sequence

When energizing an electrical system, the correct sequence ensures safety and prevents overloads: General Distribution Box (Main DB): This is the primary source of power distribution. It receives incoming power and supplies it to downstream distribution boxes. Power should be switched on here first to establish the main supply.

Distribution Box (Sub-DB): Receives power from the general distribution box and distributes it to various circuits or switch boxes. It acts as an intermediate control point. Switch Box: The final stage in the distribution chain, located close to the controlled equipment.

It supplies power directly to devices or machinery. The horizontal distance to equipment should not exceed 3 meters for efficiency and safety.

Power-

Off Sequence

During shutdown or in case of a power failure, the reverse order is followed to prevent backflow or electrical hazards: Switch Box: Disconnects power from the end devices first. Distribution Box: Cuts off power to multiple circuits downstream. General Distribution Box: Finally, the main supply is turned off.

Safety and Operational Considerations

Grounding and Neutral Separation: Working neutral and protective ground wires must not be mixed, and all metal parts should be properly grounded. Insulation and Connections: All connecting wires should be insulated, joints secure, and no live parts exposed. Accessibility: Ensure enough space for two people to work around the boxes, with no obstructions.

Emergency Measures: In case of electrical failure, emergency procedures may override the standard sequence. Idle Periods: If the site is inactive for more than one hour, switch boxes should be powered off and locked.

Summary

Following the correct operating sequence—general distribution box → distribution box → switch box for power-on, and the reverse for power-off—ensures safe, efficient, and reliable operation of electrical distribution systems. Proper installation, grounding, and maintenance are essential to prevent hazards and maintain system integrity.
