Overview of Drop Cable Cores

Drop cables are the final link in a fiber network, connecting distribution points to homes or businesses. The core of a drop cable contains the optical fibers that carry data, voice, and video signals. These fibers are usually single-mode and can be color-coded for easy identification during installation and maintenance.

Core ConfigurationsSingle-core drop cables: Contain one fiber, ideal for simple FTTH connections or point-to-point links. Multi-core drop cables: Typically contain 2, 6, or up to 12 fibers, allowing multiple connections from a single cable run. Self-supporting cores: Some drop cables include a dielectric strength member, such as fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) or steel wire, to provide tensile strength for aerial installations.

Construction and Protection

The cores are usually tightly buffered or housed in a loose tube, often reinforced with aramid yarn for durability and weather resistance. The outer jacket is commonly LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) or flame-retardant, suitable for indoor and outdoor environments. Some drop cables are gel-free or gel-filled, depending on moisture protection requirements.
