OPPC Optical Cable Construction Process

The construction of OPPC optical cables involves careful preparation, controlled stringing, proper tensioning, installation of fittings, and rigorous fiber testing to ensure both electrical and optical performance.

Preparation Before Construction

Before starting OPPC installation, detailed planning and preparation are essential. This includes gathering data on voltage, conductor type, tower parameters, and environmental conditions, confirming the construction plan, and preparing all necessary tools and equipment according to the routing and structural parameters of the OPPC cable. Field tests and acceptance of the OPPC and fittings should be conducted with participation from the owner, construction supervisor, and factory representatives.

Additionally, the optical fibers are tested using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to record baseline parameters. Stringing and Tension ControlOPPC cables are typically installed using the tension stringing method, which maintains a constant tension throughout the stringing process. Key points include: Selecting a hauling rope compatible with the cable diameter.

Controlling construction tension within 10% of the Rated Tensile Strength (RTS), not exceeding 20% RTS. Maintaining an initial stringing speed of 5 m/min, increasing to 30 m/min after passing towers, with a maximum of 40 m/min. Ensuring the optical cable does not jump out of pulleys, with proper deflection angles and supervision.

Reserving approximately 10 meters of cable at tower ends for connections. During straining and hanging, tension should remain below 20% RTS, and straining should be performed from one direction using preformed armor rods to avoid fiber damage. Sag adjustments are typically 2–3 meters for through-tension towers.

Installation of Fittings and Accessories

Fittings such as tension clamps, suspension fittings, and lightning protection dampers must be installed according to manufacturer instructions. Proper installation ensures mechanical stability, electrical safety, and protection of the optical fibers.

Fiber Connection and Testing

Fiber connections are made using intermediate and terminal joint boxes, with methods chosen based on tower type and project plan. After installation, a bidirectional whole-range test is performed to measure fiber loss, including unidirectional welding loss and bidirectional average loss. All results are recorded for quality assurance.

Cable Construction and StandardsOPPC cables consist of optical fibers embedded in protective buffer tubes, surrounded by one or more layers of aluminium, aluminium alloy, or steel armoring helically stranded to meet mechanical and electrical requirements. This design ensures the cable can carry current while transmitting data and withstand environmental stresses. Installation must comply with relevant standards such as IEC 60794-4-30, DIN 48 207, EN 50182, or ANSI/IEEE 524-1980.

Handling and Safety

Careful handling is critical during transportation, unloading, and storage. Cable drums must be moved using horizontal drum axles, avoiding tipping or dropping, to prevent damage to the fibers and armoring. Proper training of construction operators and test personnel is essential to ensure safe and effective installation.

Summary

The OPP

C construction process integrates mechanical, electrical, and optical considerations, requiring meticulous planning, controlled stringing, precise tensioning, correct fittings installation, and thorough fiber testing. Adherence to standards and careful handling ensures reliable performance for both power transmission and optical communication.
