Ethiopia Fiber Optic Cable

Ethiopia has a growing fiber optic network spanning over 23,000 km, supported by local manufacturing and international technology partnerships. National Fiber Optic InfrastructureEthiopia's fiber optic backbone is primarily managed by Ethio Telecom, which owns about 23,000 km of fiber-optic cable connecting major cities and linking to undersea cables via Djibouti. In 2024, Ethio Telecom partnered with Djibouti Telecom and Sudatel to establish the Horizon Fiber corridor, a multi-terabit cross-border link connecting Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Sudan, enhancing regional connectivity.

Fiber deployment supports both fixed broadband and mobile networks, with 5G commercial services launched in Addis Ababa and ongoing expansion to other cities.

Market and Technology

The Ethiopian fiber optic cable market is expanding rapidly, with international suppliers introducing high-capacity solutions. Huawei's OptiXtreme 400G DR4 series supports long-haul and metro networks at speeds up to 400 Gbps, while ZTE's ZXMP-G6500 series can handle up to 650 Gbps for data centers. Corning's SMF-28® ULL fiber enables ultra-long-distance transmission of up to 10,000 km at 400 Gbps.

These technologies are being integrated into Ethiopia's growing broadband and enterprise networks.

Local Manufacturing

Ethiopia has developed a domestic fiber optic cable manufacturing industry, led by BMET Energy Telecom Industry and Trade PLC, the largest and most advanced cable manufacturer in the country.

BME

T produces a wide range of fiber optic, telecom, and electrical cables for both local and international markets, using state-of-the-art technology and quality control measures. This local production supports infrastructure growth, reduces reliance on imports, and strengthens Ethiopia's self-sufficiency in telecom hardware.

Market Adoption and Connectivity

As of 2023, Ethiopia had about 669,000 fixed broadband subscribers, with fiber deployment concentrated in Addis Ababa and select business districts. Mobile connectivity is widespread, with over 85 million mobile subscriptions, and 4G/5G networks are gradually expanding. The introduction of Safaricom Ethiopia and mobile money services like M-Pesa has increased competition and digital adoption.

Starlink has also begun beta testing, offering high-speed satellite internet as an alternative in areas with limited fiber coverage. SummaryEthiopia's fiber optic ecosystem combines extensive national infrastructure, international high-speed technology, and robust local manufacturing. The network supports the country's digital transformation, enabling faster broadband, mobile connectivity, and regional integration, while local manufacturers like BMET ensure sustainable growth and supply of fiber optic cables.

This positions Ethiopia as an emerging hub for digital infrastructure in East Africa.
