Requirements for grounding accessories in distribution boxes

Proper grounding of distribution boxes requires correctly sized ground conductors, secure connections to enclosure and mounting points, low-resistance paths, and compliance with regional electrical standards.

Ground Wire Sizing and Connections

In the US, a 10 AWG (5. 26 mm²) ground wire is typically used, while in other markets a 6 mm² wire is standard. Ground wires should connect from threaded studs on the enclosure to the mounting plate, and then from the mounting plate to the central factory grounding point.

For connections between the mounting plate and spindle plates, a 16 mm² wire is recommended, or 6 AWG (13. 29 mm²) in the US, ensuring low resistance regardless of cable length or number of spindles.

Resistance Requirements

The ground resistance between all system parts should be less than 0. 1 Ohm. For general installations, a maximum 25-ohm resistance is recommended for safety verification.

Continuity tests and grounding electrode system resistance tests should be performed to ensure proper connections.

Bonding and Accessory Requirements

Conduit grounding bushings must be bonded to the equipment enclosure for all incoming and outgoing conduits, especially those over 1-1/4” diameter. Bolted ground connectors should be provided on all enclosures, disconnect switches, pull boxes, and similar equipment, connecting to conduit bushings. Separate insulated green ground conductors must run with each feeder and branch circuit, bonded to the panel ground bus and all connected equipment.

Bonding jumpers are required across expansion or deflection fittings, and all metal piping systems must be bonded to the service equipment ground bus.

Material and Construction Considerations

For stainless steel enclosures, use factory-preset studs for grounding to ensure mechanical strength and vibration resistance. The connector material should match the enclosure to prevent electrochemical corrosion, and contact surfaces should be cleaned to reduce resistance. Flexible copper braided tape is recommended for moving parts like hinged doors, with anti-loosening washers to maintain secure connections.

In waterproof or outdoor boxes, grounding is mandatory to prevent lethal shocks and ensure circuit breakers trip during faults, following IEC 60364-4-41, NEC Article 314, and EN 62208 standards.

Testing and Maintenance

After installation, measure resistance between internal components and the main grounding terminal to verify continuity and low-resistance paths. Regular maintenance ensures long-term safety, prevents stray voltage accumulation, and reduces the risk of overheating due to poor contact. By following these guidelines, distribution boxes and their accessories can achieve safe, reliable grounding, protecting both equipment and personnel from electrical hazards.
