Fiber optic patch cords in fusion splicing solutions

Fusion splicing permanently joins two optical fibers using an electric arc, creating a low-loss, high-reliability connection between cables or pigtails. Understanding Fiber Pigtails vs.

Patch Cords

A fiber optic pigtail is a short fiber with a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other, designed for permanent splicing to incoming fiber in the field. In contrast, a patch cord has connectors on both ends and is used to connect already-terminated devices or equipment ports. Pigtails are essential when terminating bulk fiber runs, as they allow precise, low-loss connections to active equipment via fusion splicing, whereas patch cords are primarily for flexible, temporary connections.

Fusion Splicing Process

Fusion splicing joins two fibers permanently using an electric arc, producing a continuous optical path with minimal reflection and attenuation. The process involves several key steps: Preparation: Strip 3–5 cm of the fiber jacket and carefully remove the coating without bending the fiber. Clean the exposed fiber with isopropyl alcohol to remove oils and debris.

Cleaving: Use a precision cleaver to create a flat, mirror-like end on each fiber. A poor cleave can cause high loss or splice failure. Splicing: Place the fibers in the fusion splicer's V-grooves.

The splicer aligns the fibers and applies an electric arc to fuse them together, forming a permanent joint. Protection: Cover the splice with a protective sleeve to prevent mechanical damage and maintain long-term reliability. Inspection and Testing: Verify the splice quality using a microscope or optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) to ensure low insertion loss and minimal back reflection.

Best Practices and Safety

Always wear safety goggles and cut-resistant gloves to protect against high-temperature arcs and glass shards. Use anti-static measures to protect sensitive splicer electronics. Follow manufacturer recommendations for consumables and splicing parameters to reduce failure rates.

Maintain proper fiber bending radius (>30 mm) during handling to prevent microfractures.

Applications

Fusion splicing is widely used in: Telecom networks for long-haul and metro fiber deployments. Data centers for high-speed, low-loss connections.

FTT

H (Fiber to the Home) installations where pigtails are spliced to drop cables. Network upgrades where existing fiber must be joined to new runs or equipment.

Advantages

Low signal loss and minimal back reflection. Long-term reliability compared to mechanical splicing. Precision with factory-terminated connectors on pigtails.

Flexibility for custom-length field terminations. Fusion splicing, when performed correctly, ensures high-performance fiber optic networks with durable, low-loss connections, making it the preferred method for professional installations.
