Cable tray support for hydropower station project

A hydropower station cable tray installation involves structured planning, proper support fabrication, material selection, and careful laying of power, control, and fiber optic cables to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance with standards.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, review approved shop drawings detailing tray layout, lengths, and locations in electrical rooms, plant rooms, and service corridors. Inspect all materials upon delivery to ensure compliance with specifications, and remove any damaged or non-conforming items. Store cable trays and ladders horizontally on flat surfaces with timber supports at one-meter intervals, protecting them from moisture and sunlight.

Support Structure FabricationWall-mounted supports: Fabricate MS angle supports (e.g., 50 x 50 mm, 6 mm thick) at intervals of 1 meter for cable tray runs at heights around 10–12 meters. Bridge supports: For long spans (e.g., 30 m), use MS C-channels (150 x 75 mm, 5. 7 mm thick) welded to existing structures with angle supports at 1-meter intervals.

Fastening: Use high-quality bolts (e.g., Hilti nut bolts, minimum 75 mm) to secure supports to walls or structures.

Cable Tray Installation

Install perforated GI cable trays (e.g., 300 x 50 mm, 1. 6 mm thick) using high-tensile bolts, washers, and nuts. Each joint should use multiple hardware sets (e.g., M8 bolts with coupler plates) to ensure stability.

Maintain proper spacing of supports to prevent deflection or distortion under full cable load. Use horizontal and vertical bends, tees, and crosses with standard radius fittings to maintain cable integrity. Ensure equipotential bonding continuity; cable trays should not serve as circuit earthing conductors.

Cable LayingHigh-voltage cables: Lay single-core XLPE-insulated 33 kV cables carefully using rollers to avoid insulation damage. Dress cables with clamps at 1-meter intervals. Fiber optic and control cables: Measure, cut, and test cables before installation.

Insert multiple runs into HDPE conduits and lay them in the installed trays, ensuring proper bends and radius compliance. Use cable ties of approved type for vertical and horizontal runs, especially where exposed to sunlight.

Safety and Quality Assurance

Conduct site inspections and follow the Inspection & Test Plan (ITP) to ensure compliance with specifications. All operatives must attend safety induction and competency verification before work. Supervisors should monitor installation, correct unsafe conditions, and ensure adherence to method statements.

Material Selection

Choose materials based on environmental conditions: aluminum for corrosion resistance, stainless steel (AISI 316L) for high-strength and corrosive environments, or pultruded fiberglass for lightweight, corrosion-resistant applications. Ensure separation of power, control, and instrumentation cables to prevent interference and heat buildup.

Documentation and Compliance

Maintain as-built drawings, material certificates, and non-conformance reports (NCRs) for quality control.

Follow IE

C 61537 standards for cable management systems and ensure all installation practices comply with project requirements. This scheme ensures that cable trays in a hydropower station are structurally sound, electrically safe, and compliant with industry standards, supporting reliable operation of power, control, and communication systems.
