Busbar Connector Temperature Measurement Method

Busbar connector temperatures can be measured using infrared sensors, fiber optic systems, or indirect modeling based on surface temperatures, enabling continuous monitoring and early fault detection. Infrared (IR) Temperature MeasurementInfrared sensors are widely used for monitoring busbar joints and connectors. These sensors detect the surface temperature of busbars without direct contact, which is crucial for safety in high-voltage environments.

To improve accuracy, the busbar surface should be painted, coated, or shrink-wrapped to make it non-reflective. Sensor optics can be selected based on busbar width and measurement distance, with wide-angle optics for short distances and narrow-angle optics for higher voltages or longer distances. Focused optics are available for narrow busbars or edge-on measurements.

I

R sensors like the PyroMiniBus can measure temperatures from -20°C to 1000°C and operate in ambient temperatures up to 120°C, providing continuous monitoring and early warning for maintenance purposes.

Fiber Optic Temperature Monitoring

Fiber optic systems, such as Linear Heat Detection (LHD), use a sensor cable attached along the busbar or within switchgear. The system measures a complete temperature profile in seconds, covering all panels, busbars, and joints. Alarm zones are configurable, allowing detection of maximum temperature, rate-of-rise, or adaptive thresholds.

This method provides precise localization of hotspots and can be integrated with SCADA systems for centralized monitoring and visualization of temperature distribution.

Indirect Temperature Measurement

For fully insulated busbars, indirect methods can estimate conductor temperature using surface temperature measurements. This approach involves radial and axial temperature calculations, corrected iteratively to account for contact resistance at joints. Tests show that this method can achieve steady-state errors under 5 K and transient errors around 10 K under abnormal contact conditions.

It is particularly useful for prefabricated busbar joints where direct measurement of the conductor is difficult.

Key Considerations

Contact Resistance: Elevated contact resistance at busbar joints can cause localized heating, which must be monitored to prevent failures. Continuous Monitoring: Traditional periodic inspections are insufficient; continuous monitoring allows early detection of thermal anomalies 72–96 hours before potential failures. Integration: Systems can be networked to central SCADA platforms for real-time monitoring, data logging, and alarm management.

Safety: Sensors should be positioned at a safe distance to avoid electric arcs, and measurement methods should not interfere with busbar operation. By combining these methods, electrical systems can achieve reliable, continuous temperature monitoring of busbar connectors, reducing the risk of overheating, equipment damage, and unplanned outages.
