PoE powered switch positive and negative

In a PoE-powered switch, power is delivered over Ethernet cable pairs with one or two pairs carrying positive current and one or two pairs carrying negative current, while polarity is automatically managed to ensure compatibility with powered devices.

How Po

E Delivers PowerPoE (Power over Ethernet) injects DC voltage (typically 50–57V) into Ethernet cables through the center taps of the data transformers inside the switch, known as the Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE). The current is split across the twisted pairs, which minimizes interference with data transmission. The positive rail is usually common for all ports, while the negative rail is controlled by MOSFETs driven by the PSE controller.

Cable Pair WiringPoE uses two main wiring schemes: Alternative A: Power is delivered over the data pairs (pins 1,2 and 3,6) using transformer center taps, a method called phantom power. Alternative B: Power is delivered over the spare pairs (pins 4,5 and 7,8) directly, without transformer coupling. In both cases, two wires carry positive current and two wires carry negative current, which reduces resistance and heating effects.

In four-pair PoE (IEEE 802. 3bt), two pairs are positive and two pairs are negative, allowing higher power delivery. Polarity ManagementPoE standards allow the PSE to apply power in either polarity, meaning the powered device (PD) must be able to accept power regardless of which wire pair is positive or negative.

P

Ds use bridge rectifiers or actively controlled MOSFETs to ensure the correct polarity is applied to their internal DC-DC converters, protecting the device from reverse voltage.

Summary

Positive and negative rails: Positive is usually common; negative is switched by MOSFETs. Cable pairs: Two pairs for positive, two pairs for negative in four-pair PoE; either data or spare pairs can be used. Polarity handling: PDs automatically correct polarity, allowing PSE to apply power in any orientation.

Standards: IEEE 802. 3af/at uses two pairs; IEEE 802. 3bt can use all four pairs for higher power delivery.

This design ensures that PoE switches can safely and efficiently deliver power to a wide range of devices without interfering with data transmission.
