SAS array card fiber optic connection

Fiber optic SAS connections use optical cables and QSFP transceivers to link SAS array cards to storage shelves, enabling high-speed, long-distance data transfer.

Overview of Optical SAS

Optical SA

S (Serial Attached SCSI) is designed to connect SAS storage shelves using active optical cables instead of traditional copper cables, providing higher bandwidth and longer reach. These connections are particularly useful when storage shelves are located more than 10 meters from the SAS controller or in MetroCluster configurations, where optical SAS can replace FibreBridge devices. Key ComponentsSAS Host Bus Adapter (HBA) or RAID Card: The array card that interfaces with the storage system.

QSF

P Transceivers: Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable modules that plug into the HBA or switch and connect to optical SAS cables. They support multiple lanes (e.g., 4x10 Gbit/s) and can be single-mode or multimode fiber.

Optical SA

S Cables: Active cables that carry data over fiber, compatible with QSFP connectors. They maintain signal integrity over longer distances than copper SAS cables.

Connection Guidelines

Identify the Correct Ports: Check your SAS array card and storage shelf for QSFP or optical SAS ports. Select the Appropriate Cable: Use multimode fiber for shorter distances (up to ~100m) and single-mode fiber for longer distances (up to several kilometers) depending on your deployment. Secure the Connection: Insert the QSFP transceiver into the HBA or switch port, then connect the optical SAS cable.

Ensure the connectors are properly latched to prevent signal loss. Verify Configuration: Confirm that the storage system recognizes the connected shelves. Some systems may require firmware or software configuration to enable optical SAS support.

Advantages

High Bandwidth: Supports multiple SAS lanes for faster data transfer. Longer Reach: Optical cables allow distances far beyond copper SAS limits. Flexibility: Ideal for complex storage layouts, including stretch MetroCluster setups.

Reduced Interference: Fiber optics are immune to electromagnetic interference, improving signal reliability.
