How to configure a dual-core fiber optic core switch

The FOS-2x2-TTL dual-core fiber optic switch is configured by connecting power, fibers, and TTL control, followed by optical alignment and mode selection.

Unpacking and Initial Setup

Inspect the unit: Ensure the FOS-2x2-TTL is undamaged and clean before use. Power connection: Plug the 12 VDC power supply into the main connection on the FOS unit. Maximum power consumption is 200 mA.

Fiber connections: Remove protective caps from SMA connectors and attach your fiber optic cables to the SMA plugs. The unit is factory-optimized for 200 µm core diameter fibers; other diameters require focal point adjustment.

TT

L control: Connect the included SUB-D 15-pin interface cable for automatic TTL operation. This allows external devices to control the switch electronically.

Optical Alignment and Adjustment

Open the shutter: Move the shutter switch to the OPEN position to allow light transmission. Connect measurement devices: Attach a fiber optic spectrometer or optical power meter to one output port and a light source to the input port. Adjust optics: Loosen the locking screw on the SMA connector and move the connector to optimize optical power.

Tighten the screw once alignment is complete.

Operational Modes

The FOS-2x2-TTL supports automatic TTL switching and can be manually adjusted if needed. Factory settings are optimized for standard fiber cores, but the focal points can be modified for different fiber diameters. Ensure the operating environment is clean and stable to maintain optical performance.

Integration with Fiber NetworksIn industrial or laboratory networks, dual-core switches can be integrated into star or ring topologies for redundancy and high-speed data transfer. For Ethernet integration, use SFP modules or fiber media converters if the switch lacks direct fiber ports. Ring topologies provide fault tolerance, allowing data to reroute in case of fiber or switch failure.

Pinout Reference

The 15-pin connector includes ground and TTL signal lines; consult the FOS manual for detailed pin assignments. Proper pinout configuration ensures reliable TTL control and prevents misoperation.

Summary

To configure a dual-core fiber optic switch: connect power, attach fibers, set TTL control, open the shutter, and adjust optical alignment. For network applications, consider topology, redundancy, and SFP or media converter integration to ensure reliable operation and high-speed data transmission.
