Power Cable Tray Construction

The construction of a power cable tray system involves careful planning, material selection, support installation, precise tray alignment, cable laying, and proper grounding to ensure safety and compliance.

Planning and Preparation

The first step is to review the project drawings and Bill of Quantities (BOQ) to verify tray routes, lengths, and load requirements. Materials, including trays, ladders, fittings, and accessories, should be inspected for compliance with approved specifications and stored properly on a flat surface with timber supports to prevent damage from moisture or sunlight. A clear plan ensures proper clearance, load capacity, and cable separation throughout the installation.

Selecting Tray Type and Material

Choose the appropriate tray type based on cable type, load, and environmental conditions. Common types include: Ladder trays: Ideal for large power cables, offering ventilation and convenient cable anchoring points. Ventilated trough trays: Provide continuous support for smaller control or instrumentation cables.

Solid-bottom trays: Used where heat buildup is minimal or for aesthetic purposes. Materials vary from galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, to fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), selected for corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and environmental suitability.

Support Installation

Proper support is critical for mechanical integrity. Supports are typically installed using: Trapeze hangers for ceiling suspensions. Cantilever wall brackets for wall-mounted runs.

Support spacing is determined based on tray type, cable weight, and manufacturer specifications, commonly 1. 5 to 3 meters apart. Shorter spans provide rigidity, while longer spans reduce material costs but require stronger trays.

Tray Alignment and Assembly

Trays are aligned straight and level using tools like laser levels. Sections are connected with splice plates and bolts, ensuring smooth interior surfaces to prevent cable damage. Bolts should be tightened securely but not over-tightened, allowing minor adjustments during alignment.

Cable Laying

Cables are laid neatly within the tray, organized by voltage and function. Cable ties or straps are used to maintain separation and prevent sagging. Adequate slack should be left for thermal expansion and future maintenance.

Overfilling must be avoided to prevent overheating and code violations.

Grounding and Bonding

Metal trays require proper bonding and grounding to maintain electrical safety. Bonding jumpers are installed across tray sections to ensure continuity and compliance with NEC Article 392.

Final Checks and Documentation

After installation, perform a thorough inspection for: Loose clamps or misaligned traysUnsupported spansOverfilled sectionsCorrosion or damage Label all cables and maintain updated documentation for future maintenance and audits.

Maintenance

Routine inspections are essential to ensure the tray system remains safe and reliable. Check for corrosion, loose wires, or broken clamps, and perform preventive maintenance to extend the system's lifespan. By following these steps, a power cable tray system can be constructed to provide organized, safe, and code-compliant support for electrical cables, facilitating both current operation and future upgrades.
