Construction of steel cable trays

Steel cable trays are constructed through a series of steps including material selection, cutting, shaping, forming, welding, and surface treatment to ensure strength, durability, and corrosion resistance.

Material Selection

The first step in constructing steel cable trays is choosing the appropriate material. Mild steel is commonly used for its strength and cost-effectiveness, while stainless steel (e.g., AISI 316L) is preferred in corrosive or moist environments due to its chromium content, which forms a protective oxide layer. Galvanized steel, either pre-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized, is also widely used to enhance corrosion resistance, with zinc providing sacrificial protection against rust.

Cutting and Shaping

Once the steel is selected, it is cut into precise pieces for the tray's base, sides, and rungs. Precision cutting ensures smooth edges and proper dimensions, which are critical for structural integrity and safety. The cut pieces are then shaped into strips or profiles ready for bending and assembly.

Forming and Welding

The shaped steel components are bent and welded to form the tray structure. Common types of steel cable trays include ladder trays, solid-bottom trays, and ventilated trays. Ladder trays consist of side rails connected by rungs, while solid or ventilated trays provide additional protection for sensitive cables.

Welding ensures a strong, rigid structure capable of supporting cable loads and withstanding mechanical stresses.

Surface Treatment

To prevent corrosion, steel trays often undergo galvanization. Pre-galvanized steel is coated before fabrication, while hot-dip galvanization involves immersing the assembled tray in molten zinc. The zinc layer forms a protective patina that slows corrosion and extends the tray's lifespan.

Stainless steel trays rely on their natural chromium oxide layer for protection.

Assembly and Installation

Steel cable trays are installed using support elements such as wall brackets, suspended supports, or ceiling mounts. Fittings like bends, T-pieces, and cross-overs allow the tray to follow the desired cable routing. Mounting elements secure the trays to the structure, and accessories like covers or barrier strips provide additional protection.

Proper installation ensures that trays can safely support cables, resist environmental factors, and comply with standards such as DIN EN 61537 and BS EN 61537.

Quality and Safety Considerations

Steel cable trays must withstand mechanical loads, environmental conditions, and potential short-circuit forces. Compliance with national and international standards ensures safety, durability, and reliability in industrial and commercial installations. By following these steps, steel cable trays provide a robust, long-lasting solution for cable management in a wide range of environments.
