How to install a trapezoidal cable tray on a cable pole

Cable poles (supports) in a trapezoidal cable tray should be installed using proper spacing, secure mounting, and alignment to ensure stability and prevent sagging.

Determine Support Spacing

For trapezoidal cable trays, the spacing of supports is critical to prevent bending or sagging. Standard practice is to place supports every 1. 5 to 3 meters, depending on the tray load and cable weight.

Shorter spacing (1. 5 m) provides maximum rigidity, while longer spacing (3 m) reduces material costs but requires a stronger tray to handle the load. Calculate the total cable weight per meter to select the appropriate tray thickness and support strength.

Choose Mounting Method

There are two common ways to mount cable trays: Wall Mounting (Cantilever Brackets): L-shaped brackets extend from the wall to support the tray. Drill holes at marked support points, insert anchors, and secure the brackets level to the wall. Ceiling Suspension (Trapeze Hangers): Use threaded rods and a horizontal strut or flat bar to suspend the tray from the ceiling.

Attach the rods to the ceiling with anchors, then connect the strut to create a stable shelf for the tray.

Mark and Align Support Points

Use a laser level or chalk line to mark the tray route on the wall or ceiling, ensuring a straight path. Mark the exact locations for each support according to the calculated spacing. Include positions for bends, tees, or elevation changes.

Install Supports and Tray Sections

Drill and secure anchors for each support. Attach cantilever brackets or trapeze hangers, ensuring they are level and aligned. Lift the trapezoidal tray sections onto the supports.

Secure the tray to the supports using hold-down clips, bolts, or splice plates to prevent movement. Ensure all tray sections are straight and properly connected before tightening to avoid misalignment or “snake-like” bends.

Additional Considerations

Deburr tray edges to prevent cable insulation damage. Check tray fill to ensure cables do not exceed 40–50% of tray capacity, maintaining airflow and reducing heat buildup. Material selection should match environmental conditions, such as corrosion resistance for humid or chemical-prone areas.

By following these steps, trapezoidal cable trays will be properly supported, aligned, and safe for long-term cable installation.
