Fiber Optic Receiver in Merging Unit

A fiber optic receiver in a merging unit converts optical signals from sensors or digitized data streams into electrical signals for use by protection relays or control systems.

Role in Merging Units

Merging units (MUs) are key components in digital substations, enabling the digitization of analog and binary signals from current transformers (CTs), voltage transformers (VTs), and other primary equipment into standardized formats like IEC 61850 Sampled Values (SV) and GOOSE messages. These digitized signals are transmitted over fiber optic cables to control house relays or process interface units. The fiber optic receiver is the endpoint that detects the optical signal and converts it back into an electrical signal suitable for the receiving equipment.

How Fiber Optic Receivers Work

Fiber optic receivers use semiconductor detectors, such as silicon photodiodes for short wavelengths or InGaAs photodiodes for long wavelengths, to convert incoming light pulses into electrical signals. In high-speed applications, avalanche photodiodes (APDs) may be used to amplify weak signals, providing higher sensitivity and lower noise. The receiver ensures that the timing and integrity of the sampled values are preserved, which is critical for protection and control functions in substations.

Integration in Digital Substations

In systems like the SEL-TMU or H Nu TMU10, the merging unit digitizes analog signals from primary equipment and transmits them via fiber optics to relays in the control house. The fiber optic receiver in the relay or interface unit: Converts the optical signal to an electrical signal. Maintains synchronization for accurate protection and measurement.

Supports multiple channels for high-density data acquisition. Enables full end-to-end digitization of the substation process bus.

Advantages

Using fiber optic receivers in merging units provides several benefits: Electrical isolation between the substation yard and control house. High-speed, low-latency communication for protection and control. Reduced electromagnetic interference, improving signal integrity.

Scalability for multiple relays and sensors without additional copper wiring. In summary, the fiber optic receiver is a critical component in merging units, ensuring that digitized signals from the substation yard are accurately and reliably delivered to protection relays and control systems, enabling the full digital substation architecture.
