Nigerian Fiber Optic Communication

Nigeria is rapidly expanding its fiber optic network through Project Bridge, aiming to deploy 90,000 km of fiber to enhance nationwide connectivity and digital access.

Overview of Project Bridge

Project Bridge is a national initiative led by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to establish a robust fiber optic backbone across Nigeria. The project aims to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fiber optic cables, complementing the existing 35,000 km, to achieve a total of 125,000 km, making Nigeria's fiber network the third largest in Africa. The initiative is part of the National Broadband Plan (2020–2025), targeting 70% internet penetration by 2025 and 80% for underserved populations by 2027.

Implementation and Funding

Project Bridge operates under a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) structured as a public-private partnership (PPP). The Nigerian government holds a minority stake of 25–49%, while private sector companies and development finance institutions, including the World Bank and African Development Bank, provide the remaining funding. The total estimated cost is $2 billion, financed through a combination of sovereign loans and private equity.

The SP

V is managed independently with a professional board and management team to ensure efficiency and accountability.

Objectives and Impact

The project is designed to: Expand broadband access to all 774 local government areas, schools, hospitals, and underserved communities. Boost internet speed and reliability, increasing penetration to over 70% nationwide. Create employment opportunities, with up to 20,000 direct jobs and 150,000 indirect jobs.

Stimulate Nigeria's digital economy, potentially increasing GDP by approximately $30 billion over four years. Train 5,000 youths through the Digital Bridge Institute to develop ICT skills.

Timeline and Current Status

The project was conceived in 2025 and is scheduled for delivery in Q1 2026. Workshops and stakeholder engagements have been conducted nationwide to coordinate efforts and ensure equitable access to digital infrastructure. Once completed, Project Bridge will provide high-speed, resilient, and open-access broadband connectivity across urban and rural areas, significantly reducing the digital divide.

Significance

Project Bridge represents Nigeria's largest digital fiber backbone investment in any developing nation. By providing a wholesale, open-access network, it is expected to accelerate innovation, support digital services, and enhance the country's competitiveness in the global digital economy. This initiative positions Nigeria as a regional leader in ICT infrastructure and lays the foundation for future technological advancements, including AI and digital skill development.
