Table of Steel Content in Cable Trays

Cable trays are typically made from carbon steel, stainless steel (AISI 316L), or galvanized steel, with steel content varying by type and finish.

Common Steel Types and Content

Carbon Steel

Used in standard ladder, ventilated, and solid-bottom trays. Often pre-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized for corrosion protection. Complies with ASTM A1011 (hot-rolled) or ASTM A1008 (cold-rolled) standards for structural steel with improved formability.

Steel content is essentially 100% iron with carbon content typically below 0. 3%, depending on grade.

Stainless Steel

Commonly AIS

I 316L grade for high corrosion resistance. Contains 10. 5–16% chromium, 2–3% molybdenum, and less than 1.

2% carbon. Provides excellent resistance to chlorides and harsh environments. Used in chemical plants, coastal areas, or other corrosive environments.

Galvanized Steel

Carbon steel coated with zinc via hot-dip (ASTM A123) or electroplating (ASTM B633). Zinc layer protects steel from corrosion while maintaining structural strength. Steel content remains the same as base carbon steel; zinc is an additional protective layer.

Mechanical properties: Steel trays are selected for strength, rigidity, and load-bearing capacity. Stainless steel adds corrosion resistance but may be slightly less rigid than carbon steel of the same thickness. Standards compliance: Ensure trays meet NEMA VE 1/VE 2, ANSI/NFPA 70, and relevant ASTM standards for steel and coatings.

This table provides a practical reference for engineers and designers to select cable trays based on steel content, grade, and protective finish, ensuring both structural integrity and environmental suitability.
