How to connect the fiber optic cable to the router and how to unplug it

Fiber optic cables connect to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), not directly to a standard router, and must be handled carefully to avoid damage.

Connecting the Fiber Optic Cable

Locate the ONT: Your fiber line terminates at the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), usually installed by your ISP near the fiber entry point in your home or office. Remove protective caps: Both the fiber cable connector and the ONT port have dust caps. Remove them carefully without touching the fiber tip.

Align the connector: Most residential fiber cables use SC/APC or SC/UPC connectors. Align the connector's key or tab with the ONT port. Insert the cable: Push the connector gently into the ONT port until you hear or feel a click, indicating a secure connection.

Connect the ON

T to the router: Use an Ethernet cable from the ONT's LAN or Ethernet port to the router's WAN or Internet port. Power on devices: Turn on the ONT first, wait for the status lights to stabilize, then power on the router.

Unplugging the Fiber Optic Cable

Power off devices: Turn off the router and, if possible, the ONT to prevent signal issues. Release the connector: Press the release tab on the SC connector (if present) and gently pull the cable straight out. Avoid twisting or bending the fiber.

Replace dust caps: Immediately cover both the fiber cable end and the ONT port with their protective caps to prevent dust or damage.

Handling Precautions

Do not touch the fiber tip: Oils or dirt can degrade signal quality. Avoid bending the cable sharply: Maintain a gentle curve; fiber cables are fragile. Keep connectors clean: Use a lint-free cloth or fiber cleaning kit if needed.

Secure placement: Ensure the ONT and router are in a dry, ventilated area near power outlets. By following these steps, you can safely plug and unplug fiber optic cables while maintaining optimal internet performance and protecting your equipment.
